The Tattoo zooms to new heights in Spain

The American Embassy in Spain thought so highly of what its counterpart did in Poland to promote The Tattoo -- and who can blame them? -- that it just reprinted the wonderful writeup from the Polish issue of Zoom in on the USA for all of its readers in Spain. We're now on the front page of the October 2007 issue in Spain.
We're hoping that lots of American Information Centers around the world follow suit. Lord knows there's nothing better to be said about America than that it's home to ReadTheTattoo.com!

Norman Mailer died today

One of America's great writers -- and, occasionally, a great journalist -- died this morning in New York. Norman Mailer is too often ignored by younger readers and too little prized by older ones.
Just to stick to the journalism side of this heavyweight author, check out his fabulous Armies of the Night, Of a Fire on the Moon The Executioner's Song and Oswald's Tale: An American Mystery.
An inventor of the New Journalism, a founder of The Village Voice, a hipster novelist with a raging ego, Mailer lived a life just this side of Hunter Thompson, but left a body of work that far exceeds the gonzo great.
He'll be missed by anyone who cares about writing, journalism or America.

Tattoo alum to cover higher education in North Carolina

Amanda Lehmert, one of our bright shining stars, is leaving the Cape Cod Times this month to begin reporting about higher education for the Greensboro News and Record. She's slated to begin there on Nov. 26 - just in time for the holidays.
We wish Lehmert lots of luck in her new position, where she'll be working with another great Tattoo alum, Joe (Wilbur) Killian.
Greensboro's gonna kick some ass.

Finnish school shooting

The news that an 18-year-old gunned down seven other students and a principal in Tuusla, Finland today brings home yet again the horror of mass murder in a schoolhouse. It's a subject The Tattoo has covered quite a bit over the years and perhaps it's helpful to point the way to the stories we've done on the issue.
